REFLECTIVE JOURNAL (Safety and Security)

5.1.1 Identify issues and trends in the tourism and hospitality industry (Safety and Security)

Safety and security are vital providing quality in tourism. More than any other economic
activity, the success or failure of a tourism destination depends on being able to provide a safe
and secure environment for visitors. Therefore, every place and the country needs to take a serious
look at safety and security in order to avoid any unwanted accidents. Safety is an essential
component in all tourist destinations which includes transport routes, zoos, parks, restaurants,
restrooms, hotels, malls or religious places to visitors.

Firstly, the nature of the physical environment also plays a role in safety and security as it does
not give any warning or signs of accidents to visitors. However, visitors should take precautions
and be alert to any unwanted incidents. Examples, the effects of the nature of the physical
environment that need to be taken into account are high-risk mountain climbing and slipping or
beach surfing that may result in an accident in the deep water.

Meanwhile, for example, Ali wanted to climb a very high Mount Kinabalu in Malaysia and when
Ali was somewhere he slipped because it was slippery and could not cling to the rope provided
so he fell. Therefore, before starting climbing Ali should seek information or news about the
danger or any previous accidents for climbing Mount Kinabalu. Therefore, he had the
information to take precautionary measures when he arrived at the place of the accident.

Next, the chances of involving in criminal activity are extremely high in a place or country
where there is a lot of tourist attraction as these perpetrators take the opportunity to criminalize
unwary or adventurous visitors when they are busy with travel activities. Moreover, visitors should
be careful with these criminals so that none of our valuable items are lost to them. Therefore if
this is criminal activity because of the unemployed and lazy work for their own or family life.

After that, criminal activity there are many ways to do this, and even criminal activity occurs in
the majority of countries with tourist attractions. An example of criminal activity is
pickpocketing or stealing is common among tourists who are always enamored with travel
activities. So in order to avoid this criminal activity, tourists must be concerned about the
surrounding environment even when they are busy with travel activities.

Subsequently, when promoting a tourist attraction it tends to gain the media attention easily. So
if anything goes wrong with the security of the image of the place, this will cause the tourist
attraction to be affected. However, if there was a riot in the tourist attraction and it was broadcast
on media coverage, then the number of tourists and receipts would decrease because they were
afraid that something would happen to them.

Health issues are of concern to safety and security as there are a variety of diseases experienced
by children as well as adults. Therefore, if a country or tourist destination is contaminated with
foodborne and waterborne diseases, vector-borne dengue diseases, pandemic flu, SARS,
Chikungunya, Ebola, and Zika. So tourists will not travel to the tourist attractions or the country
because they fear that the disease is spreading to them. Therefore, a tourist must redesign where
they want to travel or otherwise.

Lastly, in my suggestion, we need to take more precautionary measures to maintain safety and
security. If a tourist attraction and a country do not guarantee safety then it will affect the
tourism industry, the image of each tourism destination and the country itself, and the economic
and financial tourism industry.
